The equipment below is the minimum one should need during the tour. Additional clothing or personal equipment can be added. But it must be remembered that it will have to be carried. Ideally the rucksack, when packed, should weigh about six to eight kilos (13 to 18 pounds). Anyone carrying more than ten kilos (22 pounds) should think again! Excess baggage could be sent on by rail every three days or so. (see baggage transport under Descriptive Itineraries.)
- Boots, comfortable, well walked-in
- Socks, 2 or 3 pairs
- Gaiters (snow on the passes in early season)
- Long underwear
- Trousers, 1 pair, baggy, warm. Jogging pants are good. No jeans!
- Shorts, 2 pairs
- T-shirts, 2 or 3
- Long sleeved shirt, 2
- Fibre pile jacket or a pullover
- Waterproof jacket and trousers, lightweight
- Hat and gloves
- Head torch or flashlight
- Sun/snow glasses
- Water container, one litre capacity
- Sun cream and lip salve, strong sun factor
- Small towel or washcloth (not provided at mountain huts!)
- First aid kit for personal use, blisters etc.
- Plastic bags for keeping articles and clothes dry
- Rucksack or backpack with hip belt (saddle bag and small day pack or rucksack for bike tour).

Optional Items:
- Walking pole(s) (Highly recommended!!)
- Pocket knife
- Lightweight sandals
- Sheet sleeping bag for dormitories
